What Comes After the Dark?

After all the snow, raging wind, and torrential rain,
it was no surprise to see the snowdrops peeping above ground,
stalwart spears of promise that they are.

What did surprise me were the other spring flowers
equally determined in emerging from the cold and dark
to wave their flags of survival and hope.

Tiny little tete a tete daffodils
bought for me by my brother
as indoor plants,
showed they are made of stern stuff
 and overwintered
 with the best of them.

My biggest surprise was
 to see the wallflower,
as the thaw set in,
standing all sprightly
with it's feet still in the snow
but it's head in the air.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;  Heb. 10:23
- New American Standard Version (1995)
